Testing the complete system in the vehicle

Alarm security is not simply a list of sensors. The position, wiring method, vehicle construction and behaviour of the factory system all matter.

When fitting load-area PIR detectors to panel vans with a metal bulkhead, I chose hard-wired detectors. The load area and bulkhead create a self-contained metal enclosure, and I did not believe a wireless detector was a suitably reliable engineering choice in that environment. Wireless could be appropriate where there was no bulkhead or where a camper conversion used a non-metal partition, but ease of installation should not take priority over dependable operation.

High-position door switches were added because factory switches were often low in the door and might not detect the beginning of a peel or fold attack. The purpose was to trigger the alarm early, before the attack progressed into much more expensive damage.

What customers say

These extracts are from genuine five-star Google reviews.

★★★★★"Your locks saved my van on New Year's Eve. The alarm went off and a neighbour came out and found them trying to open the door. They ran off when the neighbour challenged them."
Barry McCooey · Google review, February 2019
★★★★★"I had external locks fitted and no panels rippled, they fitted an alarm, immobiliser and tracker. When he showed me the work under the bonnet, I couldn't tell which was the new wiring loom compared to original."
Galaxy Video · Google review, February 2022
★★★★★"Jeff was brilliant with the installation of an immobiliser on my new car."
David Taylor · Google review, August 2017

Common questions

Why do you use hard-wired PIR detectors rather than wireless ones in van load areas?

Because the load area and bulkhead form a self-contained metal enclosure, and I do not consider a wireless detector a reliable engineering choice in that environment. Wireless can suit vehicles without a bulkhead, such as camper conversions with a non-metal partition, but I will not sacrifice dependable operation for ease of fitting.

Why add high-position door switches when factory switches already exist?

Factory switches are often mounted low in the door and may not detect the start of a peel or fold attack. A high-position switch is intended to trigger the alarm earlier, before the attack has progressed into much more expensive damage.

Is alarm security just about adding more sensors?

No. Position, wiring method, vehicle construction and the behaviour of the factory system all matter, and everything needs to be tested together in the actual vehicle rather than assessed as a list of separate parts.
