Jeff Scott’s retrospective context — 2026

This investigation came from a customer who's van had been parked beneath his bedroom window. The van was locked and the alarm was armed, yet thieves attacked the driver’s door and emptied the load area without the owner hearing the alarm.

I tested the alarm first rather than assuming it was faulty. Opening the bonnet triggered it, proving the alarm worked. The real problem was the vehicle’s security logic: operation of the driver’s door barrel could disarm the alarm and, on some vehicles, unlock the load area.

This became a recurring principle in my work: I do not only look at locks, alarms and central locking as unrelated products. I test how the whole system behaves together. A component can be physically intact but still create a serious vulnerability because of the authority the vehicle gives it.

This became a recurring principle in my work: do not look at locks, alarms and central locking as unrelated products.

Original description

WOW! This Ford Custom alarm disarmed from the driver's door barrel. Please help us to SHARE this with every FORD TRANSIT CUSTOM owner so that they can check their alarm before it's too late for them as this Ford Custom owner lost his tools from his van; while it was parked under his bedroom window as he slept at night.

Please check your van alarm and email sales@sussexinstallations.co.uk to let us know your make, model, year and body type (i.e. crew cab, minibus, standard van). Then we will be able to get an idea of how big this problem is or if it is just a one off?

Note: Our electrical modification functionality may vary depending on what body control module is fitted to your van and which version software has been programmed by Ford. Whilst we take great care in selecting products and techniques that we believe are effective to increase your van's security, we can never guarantee that any van is safe from a break in, please see our website for full terms and conditions.
Jeff Scott from Sussex Installations demonstrates a critical vulnerability where attacking the driver's door barrel disarms the factory alarm on a Ford Transit Custom. The video shows how to test if a van is susceptible and showcases a high-position deadlock and electronic modifications to prevent theft.

Historical context: This video records the advice, products and attack methods relevant when it was published. Current recommendations may have changed as vehicles, products and criminal methods evolved.

Common questions

How did Jeff prove the Ford Custom's alarm system was working but still vulnerable?

He locked and double-locked the van, waited over a minute for the alarm to arm, then opened the bonnet — which set the alarm off, proving it worked — but unlocking via the driver's door barrel with the key disarmed the alarm completely without it ever sounding.

What real-world incident prompted this investigation?

A customer's Ford Custom, parked directly under his bedroom window overnight, was broken into via the driver's door barrel and emptied of tools — and the alarm never made a sound while he slept.

What three things did Jeff change to fix this vulnerability?

He replaced the driver's door barrel with a slip-ring security barrel that spins independently if gripped, added an electronic modification so the alarm no longer disarms from that barrel, and fitted a high-position hook deadlock on the back door for an extra independent mechanical layer.

0:00 -I'm Jeff from sussex installations we got a Ford Transit custom here and we're just going to do a test on the alarm system and whether or not this alarm system is disarming from the driver's
0:08 -door Barrel none of them have done that I've seen so far but for some reason this 7 plate is disarming leaving the van very vulnerable so lock double lock
0:18 -the lights are flashed on the indicators and let's just set a Wai in time here so we know how long we've waited that we've waited over a minute for the alarm
0:26 -system to actually set and then we enter the van fire the driver's door Barrel just to see what happens cuz basically this van has been parked underneath the
0:34 -driver's window during the night time someone's gone in they've attacked the barrel they've emptied out his tools and his contents from underneath his window and he's not heard a
0:43 -thing if I was to open up the van with the key I would expect that the alarm system would then go off after 15
0:52 -seconds so let's unlock it here open up the
1:03 -door nothing nothing so
1:09 -[Music]
1:13 -far there's nothing this this alarm's not going off um it has been disarmed by the manual key in the driver's door Barrel which is basically the same thing
1:21 -as what's happening when a thief attacks the van they just attacking it ripping the barrel off and he disarming the alarm giving them access to the van
1:28 -unlocking the whole van which which is absolutely crazy that would be leave these vans so vulnerable so I'm just going to do another test just to
1:37 -demonstrate that this alarm has a this vehicle has a functioning alarm and that it is a case of that driver's door Barrel turning off the alarm and it's
1:45 -not a mistake that we're doing here going to lock double lock lights of flash same as what I did the last time
1:53 -and we're going to set the timer again so we can wait for 1 minute and just to check to make sure that the alarm has had sufficient enough time to set on the
2:02 -vehicle so it's no point in just trying it straight away now just wait for one minute and then we'll be able to to
2:08 -check it out and see what happens okay so 1 minute's passed and
2:17 -let's try so we actually know that this alarm this vehicle does have an alarm and it is active we have waited long enough and we have done a fair test on this I'm going to open up the Bonnet
2:26 -which should set the alarm off because we're not disarming it straight away from that driver's door barrel and I'm not going to touch the buttons on the remote control so if I just turn the key
2:35 -the alarm's gone off and so that's demonstrate that the alarm does work and I'm not going to touch the the lock and unlock button I'm just going to turn the
2:44 -key it's disarm the alarm so what an absolute joke right finished our electrical modifications and I'll show
2:51 -you that just before we do going to lock and Deadlock and now I'm going to start the
2:58 -timer so we start the timer now let's wait a minute before we open up this van now and with our
3:06 -modifications done to see about this alarm system as well whether or not it's going to disarm now from that driver's door Barrel now at the driver's door
3:14 -Barrel itself we've actually changed this so this is our uh security driver's door Barrel what that means is it's not going to be picked by the type of lock
3:22 -picking key that picks the forward lock but um more so is this slippering on here so I mean first off this lock is difficult to grip hold of because it
3:30 -doesn't really stick out that much from the body and the edge of it is just in a shape that it' be difficult to get any set of grips on then on the outside we
3:37 -got a slip ring so if anyone grabs grabs this slip ring it just spins independently and it's not going to move the inner parts of the lock mechanism of this
3:46 -van so let's stick that key into the lock and see how our timer is doing and I can see
3:53 -now 50 seconds so we wait until it reaches 1 minute and then we'll open up the door with this key so test as what's done before but now we've changed the
4:02 -barrel although the barrel is not affecting the behavior of the alarm system but we've also done an electronic modification which will affect the
4:09 -behavior of the alarm system right so here we go a minute has
4:14 -[Music]
4:22 -passed so open up the door first off none of the rest of the doors unlocked in this van now this time we're going to hear a ding ding ding a timer and I'm
4:30 -going to be expecting that actually we're going to get a sound this time so here we
4:38 -go unlock so there we have it that is something that is pretty sensible to do or whatever reason someone does get past
4:47 -these doors if they do get the doors open if they do somehow still manage to unlock the factory locks although the factory locks a lot more secure now and
4:55 -at least the alarm system will go off if the alarm if the door is opened and we've also fit extra deadlock High position on this back door so this would mean that there's an extra layer of
5:04 -security other than the original locks and also with this locks being up high it means if someone's trying to fold this door down this this door does have
5:11 -some protection up the top here so if the door just opens it just opens a little bit then the door the deadlock stops the door from opening anymore if I
5:19 -just show you this lock and this is also the hook type lock
5:27 -so nice unit on the back of the door and that will hook into the bracket which we fitted to the other side of the post so it'll help to stop if someone's trying
5:35 -to spread that apart if you're looking for security for your for custom get in touch via the website it's
5:42 -www.sussexinstallations.co.uk thanks for
5:56 -[Music]
5:58 -watching
