Author of the ifit-3SI installation standard

I authored the 82-page ifit-3SI — Safe, Secure and Sustainable Installations document to promote better-quality vehicle installations and improve safety, security and long-term sustainability across the industry.

2010–2013 — The ifit-3SI Quality Installer Network vision

Original ifit-3SI Quality Installer Network Accredited Installer logo

The document was intended to become more than technical guidance. My vision was a national network of independently owned installation businesses approved to a consistent standard for workmanship, technical knowledge, professional service and customer experience.

Applicants were expected to study the document, demonstrate their understanding through an assessment I created and contribute a modest annual fee towards administering the scheme. A small proportion were willing to invest the study time, and another small proportion were willing to pay the fee, but only a very small number were prepared to do both.

The vehicle aftermarket is highly fragmented. I eventually concluded that I could not responsibly recommend a national network unless I had confidence that every participating business consistently reflected the values behind the standard.

Rather than reducing the requirements to increase participation, I focused more of my energy on building Sussex Installation Team Ltd as the organisation I could personally recommend — with direct influence over recruitment, training, tooling, workmanship, product design, communication, quality control and aftercare.

I wanted to create a national network that reflected my standards. When I could not guarantee that consistently across independent businesses, I focused on building those standards into every part of Sussex Installations instead.

Common questions

What is ifitstuff?

ifitstuff is a specialist technical resource founded in 2004 by Andy Wiggett, I joined it in 2006 as a volunteer and I purchased it in 2009. Since then I developed bespoke industry software and business support systems for vehicle security, accessory and technology installers.

What is the ifit-3SI standard?

ifit-3SI — Safe, Secure and Sustainable Installations — is an 82-page document I authored to promote better-quality vehicle installations and improve safety, security and long-term sustainability across the industry.

Why didn't the ifit-3SI Quality Installer Network become a national network?

The vehicle aftermarket is highly fragmented, and only a very small number of applicants were willing to both study the standard and pay the administration fee. Rather than lower the requirements to increase participation, I focused on building those standards into Sussex Installations itself, where I had direct control over quality.
