Jeff Scott's retrospective context — 2026

2016 was when thieves started twisting Ford driver's door locks with grips to unlock not only the cab, but the load area of the van as well. This was a point in history where the number of vans being broken into went through the roof. It caught on quickly on the Ford Transit MK8 and Transit Custom, with the MK8 Transit barrel sticking out further and being easier to grip.

They're unlocking not only the front of the van, but they're unlocking the load area of the van as well.

The fix here is the same principle as replacing a Ford Tibbe-vulnerable barrel: swap the factory lock for a high-security replacement, but this time the vulnerability being closed is physical rather than a picking technique. The slip ring on the replacement barrel means even if someone does get a grip on it and twists, the outer bezel just spins independently of the mechanism inside, so the lock can't be forced open that way at all. We would also develop an electrical modification to the van wiring to prevent this driver's door lock from being able to open the rear of the van under normal circumstances, Ford would later develop a software solution to do a similar thing to our electrical modification.

Original description

This is a short video to show how we repaired a Ford Transit 2016 van and secured it after the van lock on the drivers door had been broken; by a thief who gained access to the van and stole the tools from within it.

Common questions

Why could twisting the Ford Transit's door barrel with grips unlock the whole van?

Yes in 2016 the Driver's door barrel of all Ford Custom and Ford Transit MK8 produced would unlock the whole van if you turned the key twice in the unlock direction. Thieves turning the barrel with grips would do the same thing.

What does a slip ring do to stop this kind of attack?

A slip ring lets the outer bezel of the barrel spin independently of the locking mechanism inside, so even if someone does get a grip on the lock and twists it, the inner part that actually operates the lock doesn't turn with it.

Why did van break-ins increase around this time?

Thieves found they could unlock both the cab and the load area of the new-shape Ford Transit by twisting the standard driver's door barrel with grips, and this attack method spread quickly, driving a sharp rise in van break-ins.

0:01 -hi I'm Jeff from Sussex Installations, if
0:03 -you're a Ford Transit owner this could
0:04 -be a sight you're looking at at the
0:05 -moment, this is a new shaped Ford Transit,
0:08 -and what's happened here has been that
0:10 -someone's broken the barrel out of the
0:11 -door and they've broken into the van and
0:13 -stolen some of the contents, um, it seems
0:15 -to be a common thing on the Ford Transit
0:17 -Custom and the new shaped Transit, this
0:20 -one particularly cuz it sticks out quite
0:21 -away from the door, it seems to be people
0:23 -grabbing it with the grips, and even if
0:25 -it actually locked the van up with the
0:29 -remote control, and it's locked with a
0:30 -remote control, it seems that by them
0:32 -then going in here on the driver's door,
0:36 -they're unlocking it, and they're not
0:38 -only the front of the van but they're
0:40 -unlocking the load area of the van as
0:41 -well, and that's obviously where your
0:43 -tools are probably going to be, so what
0:44 -we're doing with this one is we're going
0:46 -to fit our high secure barrel, which is
0:50 -anti-lock pick, and it also comes with a
0:53 -slip ring, so it's, it's going to be
0:54 -resistant to people carrying out this
0:56 -type of forcing, gripping attack, I'll show
0:58 -you once it's finished, so stay tuned, so
1:01 -here we go, replacement lock fitted, this
1:03 -is our high security replacement barrel, it's
1:06 -difficult in terms of being picked, and
1:08 -it's also got the uh slip ring on it, and
1:10 -it'll be very difficult to grip this lock,
1:12 -so if they do manage to somehow grip
1:15 -this lock, with the way that this bezel
1:17 -is, then it doesn't actually matter, cuz
1:19 -this won't actually turn the the inside
1:21 -part, it's two two different parts, so
1:23 -this van is now secured, it's now
1:24 -repaired, if the driver does want to
1:26 -access the van battery they can use this
1:28 -key, in the event that the battery goes
1:30 -flat, but in all likeliness you're not
1:32 -going to need to, it's just one of them
1:33 -things that's there, but it's nice to
1:34 -have a lock on your van that does
1:36 -function and it's not a security
1:37 -vulnerability, if you want one for your
1:39 -van, get in touch by the website, it's
1:41 -www.sussexinstallations.co.uk, thanks for
1:44 -watching
