Jeff Scott's retrospective context — 2026

This one shows why we fitted two deadlocks to the side load door rather than one. The low one, with a long-throw bolt, holds the door secure against the standard prying attacks at the bottom edge. The high one is there for the same reason we started adding high-position door switches around this time: some thieves are willing to go to a higher level of attack and try to bend the door away from the frame at the top instead, so a second lock up high holds that end secure too rather than leaving it as the one place still vulnerable.

If someone gets the door open, the manufacturer's lock, which you've already secured, this lock is going to hold it secure, so is the bottom lock.

It's the same layering logic as the alarm side. The factory door switch sits low, so we added a second one up high specifically to catch that top-of-door bending attack and sound the alarm before the damage gets too far along, plus a PIR in the load area to catch anyone who cuts a hole in the roof instead of going through a door at all. And because the vulnerable factory barrel on the driver's door is gone, replaced with our high-security lock, a thief can no longer get in through that door and disable the whole factory alarm system the way they could with the original barrel and a Ford Tibbe key.

Original description

This is a video demonstration of different security products that we fitted to a Ford Transit Custom van at our workshop in Eastbourne.

We fitted;

1 x T Series Deadlock to the rear barn doors
2 x Deadlocks to the side load door (1 up high and 1 down low)
1 x Replacement drivers door lock
Load area PIR and high position alarm upgrade

Common questions

Why fit two deadlocks to one side load door?

A low deadlock with a long-throw bolt secures the door against standard prying at the bottom edge, while a second deadlock fitted high up specifically holds the top of the door secure against a more determined attack that tries to bend the door away from the frame.

What does the extra high-position door switch protect against?

The factory door switch sits low on the door, so an additional switch fitted high up is there to detect a thief trying to lever or bend the door out from the top, sounding the alarm before that kind of attack can do too much damage.

Why can't the factory alarm be disabled through the driver's door anymore?

The original vulnerable lock barrel that could previously be picked to disarm the whole system has been removed and replaced with a high-security lock, so that route into disabling the factory alarm no longer exists.

0:00 -hi I'm Jeff from Sussex Installations
0:02 -and I'll show you this Ford Transit Custom
0:04 -security package we've been doing today
0:05 -here in the workshop, basically what
0:07 -we've done is we changed this barrel on
0:09 -the driver's door because the barrel is
0:11 -still susceptible to lock picking or
0:13 -break-in, so we've used our high security
0:15 -replacement barrel, in addition to that
0:17 -we fitted some extra security locks, so
0:20 -this is our Ford Transit deadlocks, our
0:22 -Thatcham approved deadlocks on the rear barn
0:24 -door, and I'll show you on the side load
0:26 -door, we've actually fitted two on the
0:28 -side load door, we fitted our low down one
0:31 -with our long-throw bolt, and we fitted
0:34 -our up high one, which, this up high one, I
0:37 -guess the idea behind this is if
0:39 -somebody's more willing to go to a high
0:42 -level of attack then the up high one
0:45 -will be protecting the door against
0:48 -someone trying to bend
0:50 -the door off at the at the top, and this
0:53 -lock is in a high position, if someone, if
0:55 -you get the door open, the manufacturer's
0:57 -locking, open, which you've already
0:58 -secured, this lock is going to hold it
1:00 -secure, so is the bottom lock going to
1:02 -hold it secure, and it's also going to be
1:03 -helping to prevent against the bending
1:05 -down of the door, I just take that back
1:07 -off
1:08 -now I'll show it from
1:11 -inside, on the inside of this van, in
1:15 -addition to securing up that driver's
1:16 -door barrel, fitted the extra security
1:18 -deadlocks on the back door, the two on
1:20 -the side load door, if somebody wants to
1:21 -go to a high level of destruction, try
1:23 -and bend this door out, we beefed up the
1:25 -factory alarm system by putting a pin
1:27 -switch at the top, so the factory pin
1:30 -switch door switch position is down here
1:33 -low, and our extra switch is up here high,
1:36 -so this is helping to prevent, if someone
1:39 -goes and tries to lever the door out
1:40 -from the top, it's going to give a
1:41 -warning, it's going to sound the factory
1:43 -alarm system um before the damage gets
1:45 -too too much, hopefully, if someone is
1:48 -actually willing to go to such a high
1:50 -level destruction, they're willing to cut
1:51 -a hole in the roof of the van or do
1:53 -whatever to get inside the van, we've
1:55 -also fitted a PIR detector which will
1:58 -detect movement inside the rear of this
2:01 -vehicle, so this is going to, this is
2:02 -going to detect anyone if they do get
2:05 -inside the vehicle, and that's going to
2:06 -set off the factory alarm system, and the
2:09 -factory alarm system won't be disabled
2:11 -by the standard Ford Transit Custom lock
2:15 -in the driver's door, because that lock
2:17 -is no longer present, and it's no longer
2:18 -fitted to the vehicle, so if you want some
2:21 -security system for your van, for your
2:23 -Transit Custom van or any other vehicle,
2:25 -get in touch via the website at
2:27 -www.sussexinstallations.co.uk, thanks for
2:30 -watching
