Original description

This is an EXTRA LARGE repair shield that we developed to repair the rear doors of the Renault Trafic, Vauxhall Vivaro, Nissan NV300 and Fiat Talento vans after they have had extensive damage by thieves breaking into the rear of the van. This EXTRA LARGE repair shield is aimed at vans that have had damage around the part of the door where the handle is. We have both standard and large size repair shield that will cover over the typical damage on the flat part of the door, but this EXTRA LARGE size repair shield can cover over the damage that is sometimes caused to the door in the raised section of the door by the handle. For security purposes we strongly suggest that you also purchase our internal security shield in addition to this repair shield. The product that we developed during this video is now the REN5-RB-EXT-003 and can be found on our website here https://www.sussexinstallations.co.uk...

Historical context: This video records the advice, products and attack methods relevant when it was published. Current recommendations may have changed as vehicles, products and criminal methods evolved.

Common questions

Why did Jeff need to develop an "extra large" repair shield for these vans specifically?

Thieves were moving their attacks to the raised handle area once a standard flat shield was already covering the lower part of the door, and the complicated bump and curvature around the handle meant existing shields couldn't reach far enough to cover it.

What does fitting the XL shield actually involve?

The whole handle recess and its curvature has to be cut out of the damaged door, the original handle mechanism is then refitted into the new large shield itself, and Jeff also fits the internal latch shield behind it for a second layer of protection.

How many design attempts did it take to get the XL shield right?

Jeff went through several iterations on camera, describing it as "version 2" during filming and hoping he wouldn't need to reach "version 10" before landing on a workable stainless steel design.

0:00 -hi i'm jeff from sussex installations
0:02 -today's video is about the voxel vivaro
0:05 -up to the shape of like 2019
0:08 -the renault traffic which is 2014 until
0:11 -current we've got the fiat tolento and
0:13 -we've got the nissan nv 300 so that this
0:16 -van i'm sure you all know about holes
0:18 -getting made through the back of the van
0:20 -or even in the side load door of the van
0:22 -and that's been happening for quite a
0:24 -long time with this vehicle but thieves
0:26 -are just hammering hole after hole off
0:28 -the hull and it's just getting worse the
0:30 -damage the the size of the damage and
0:33 -the locations of the hole seems to be
0:35 -getting worse and worse now
0:37 -this has already got a security shield
0:39 -on the van but the thieves still had to
0:41 -go in to attack the van below the shield
0:44 -and where they've gone is like can you
0:47 -see this this handle sticks out on this
0:49 -van and i'm seeing this a lot now
0:51 -attacks where thieves like because
0:53 -there's a shield in this area thieves
0:55 -are moving and making a hole over here
0:57 -or they might even just be starting with
0:59 -the hole over here anyway and the
1:01 -problem is that although
1:03 -ourselves and i'm sure other companies
1:05 -have got the flat shields covering this
1:07 -area and we have our um oversized shield
1:10 -that covers out as far as here and it
1:12 -comes down to around about here but the
1:14 -problem is that because there's like a
1:17 -complicated bump in the handle
1:20 -around this point this is about as far
1:22 -as we can go with our shield so i'm
1:24 -hoping we can offer this xl repair
1:27 -solution so that your tradesmen you
1:29 -don't have your vans off the road for a
1:30 -long period of time at the body shop for
1:32 -an expensive repair or you're not like
1:33 -spending the whole time hunting ebay
1:35 -trying to find a second-hand door for
1:36 -your van so what we're going to do is
1:38 -we're going to try this cut out this
1:40 -handle this curvature replace it with a
1:43 -large shield so here's the here's the
1:45 -type of size shield that i'm talking
1:48 -about
1:49 -this is the first mock-up
1:51 -i'm gonna go and i'm gonna take a look
1:52 -at this and see where we go with this
1:54 -refine the design get it up and running
1:56 -and then see if this is a product that i
1:57 -can offer to you so if you're watching
2:00 -this video perhaps the product's already
2:01 -out and it's already on the website or
2:03 -on ebay available for you to buy from us
2:05 -sussex installations dot code at uk
2:08 -now stay tuned wish me luck hopefully
2:10 -this is going to work out
2:12 -as i've got in my mind let's see it's a
2:14 -new concept no one's ever done it before
2:16 -no one's ever tried it before as far as
2:17 -i know let's see if i can make this
2:19 -happen wish me luck
2:22 -[Music]
2:27 -[Applause]
2:29 -[Music]
2:33 -we got version 2 on the go at the moment
2:36 -look at it go
2:43 -use them quite long material this one
2:45 -it's a big shield a big plate this xl
2:48 -version that
2:52 -let's see how this
2:55 -version 2 is looking
3:02 -i hope we don't have a version 10 on
3:03 -this
3:04 -look you see the hole here in order to
3:06 -fit a black shield of this size we're
3:08 -having to cut out all this curvature of
3:11 -this handle here
3:12 -so that
3:15 -that's the door big hole in it now our
3:18 -xl shield
3:20 -to fit over
3:23 -the whole handle cut out and then i'll
3:25 -refit the handle that come out of the
3:27 -door the handle that fit into there i've
3:29 -drawn all this into the shield so we'll
3:31 -refit that into this big shield here and
3:34 -then that that part of the door will be
3:36 -would be no more
3:39 -still far from finish yet this is just
3:41 -work in progress but
3:43 -it's functional
3:45 -i think it's going to be a good solution
3:46 -for anyone that's got a fan door that's
3:48 -been damaged around the handle on one of
3:50 -these box with avaros renault traffic's
3:53 -um nissan
3:55 -toledo bands
3:57 -lock
3:59 -double lock
4:02 -unlock
4:04 -open
4:08 -cool well that's good because i cut a
4:10 -big hole in that door so
4:11 -cut a big part of the door out so i'm
4:13 -glad that um
4:15 -that this project is going to work out
4:16 -that it's going somewhere
4:18 -look at it it works to any of these
4:20 -renault traffic the voxel bavaro up
4:23 -until like 2018 when it changed shape
4:26 -the fiat uh tolento the nissan nv 300 if
4:30 -they're all like if you've got one
4:32 -that's really banged up like really
4:33 -damaged around the handle we can
4:35 -actually repair a lot of doors with this
4:37 -shield now so that's a well worthwhile
4:39 -development i mean it might be all well
4:41 -and good saying you'll find a spare door
4:42 -on ebay but apparently there's another
4:44 -100 people like you that got damaged
4:46 -back door they're all looking for the
4:47 -same door on ebay so you know it's not
4:49 -like there's a lot going around so that
4:52 -is
4:52 -you know it's not perfect it's not um
4:55 -completely like a new door it's not back
4:58 -to factory but it's a large shield it's
5:01 -stainless steel so it is going to be a
5:02 -good reinforced like difficult to to
5:05 -poke through plug a screwdriver through
5:07 -we've also fitted our internal lat
5:10 -shield inside the door as well which is
5:12 -protecting from the inside of the door
5:14 -if anyone was to get through this shield
5:16 -so the handle that was there that used
5:18 -to sit into the actual box or body work
5:21 -actually now sits into our shield and
5:22 -our shield is housing that so it's a
5:24 -little bit like there's less room here
5:26 -to grip the handle so on the factory
5:28 -handle there's a recess that goes in
5:30 -there which gives you plenty of room to
5:32 -put your hand into so now it's not so
5:34 -much room there you can put your fingers
5:36 -in there or i can put my fingers in
5:37 -there or like a small grip
5:40 -but it's it's not that big put your
5:42 -whole hand behind it like a recess that
5:45 -you would have had there before
5:47 -but it is a solution so that's sussex
5:49 -installation that's that
5:52 -xl
5:53 -solution for the exterior of your van if
5:56 -you've had a big break-in we can repair
5:59 -it get in touch with us it's not
6:00 -completely straightforward but it is a
6:02 -solution to offer you so yeah stay tuned
6:05 -don't forget to subscribe to the channel
6:07 -hope you liked the video and get in
6:09 -touch by the website it's
6:10 -www.sussexinstallations.co.uk
6:14 -thanks for watching
6:15 -[Music]
6:26 -you
