Jeff Scott's retrospective context — 2026

By 2016 we had people driving their vans to us from all over the UK, and international visitors travelling from Belgium, France, Spain and Gibraltar to our workshop in Eastbourne, because Sussex Installations were literally the only business in the world they'd trust to fit their van security deadlocks and other security. All those years of making YouTube videos to show our standard of installation and the forward-thinking, innovative van security strategies we were developing had paid off, and it felt like the right time to celebrate that world recognition properly. So we built a globe car and called him Orbee.

Whether this project would work out, and quite frankly the whole project was bonkers, but it worked out great.

Watching it back now, what stands out is that I was upfront in the video itself that our channel was tiny compared to the big ones, and I still am. It was never really about subscriber counts. It was about the fact that even a small channel, made consistently over years, was bringing customers to our door from other countries who'd never met us in person before they trusted us with their van. Orbee was a daft, fun way of marking that a genuinely global reputation had grown out of a workshop in Eastbourne and a camera.

Common questions

What is Orbee?

Orbee is Sussex Installations' globe car, built from a Mercedes Smart car, a 6-foot giant football and a load of fibreglass, standing 7ft tall with a top speed of 70mph.

Why did Sussex Installations build Orbee?

To celebrate the success of the company's YouTube channel and the world recognition it had brought the business, at a point when customers were travelling from across the UK and internationally to have their vans secured at the Eastbourne workshop.

Did customers really travel from abroad to Eastbourne for van security work?

Yes. By 2016, international visitors were travelling from Belgium, France, Spain and Gibraltar to have their van security deadlocks and other security fitted at Sussex Installations, alongside customers driving in from across the UK.
