Original description

Tradesmen up and down the country have been getting in touch with us at Sussex Installations as they are desperate to find a repair shield solution for the Ford Transit Connect short wheel base (SWB) side load door; for when thieves have damaged the door by making holes in them as they break into them. This video shows the problem and we follow Jeff Scott (director of Sussex Installations) as he tries everything to come up with a solution for this difficult problem. He then shows us start to finish how they fit the shield and later give's us a behind the scenes look at the development process that went into creating this shield that has a unique shape with a bat like resemblance! Find out more on our website at https://www.sussexinstallations.co.uk... A special thanks to Jamie of Two Slice music for helping with some original bat themed audio! Jeff from Sussex Installations demonstrates the design and development process behind a custom external shield for Ford Transit Connect short wheelbase vans. Viewers get an inside look at the engineering challenges of matching complex body contours and the step-by-step installation method for tradespeople looking to secure their vehicles against recurring break-ins. Summary

Historical context: This video records the advice, products and attack methods relevant when it was published. Current recommendations may have changed as vehicles, products and criminal methods evolved.

Common questions

Why didn't you have a repair shield for the Ford Transit Connect short wheelbase door sooner?

Because the body shape is an absolute nightmare. Below the swage line there's a wheel arch right where the latch sits, and the door has curved contours rather than a flat edge, so a normal flat shield just wouldn't fit. I spent weeks on this, trying many different concepts, before I finally got a shape that worked.

Why is it called the Bat Shield?

Because of the unique shape it ended up with, which genuinely resembles a bat. I refer to it internally as the Bat Shield, even joking on camera about whether using a Batman theme was pushing my luck on copyright.

Should I fit the external Bat Shield, the internal shield, or both?

Ideally both. The external Bat Shield repairs and covers up the hole in the door and adds a bit of extra security on its own, while the internal shield, which is compatible with both the short wheelbase and long wheelbase Transit Connect, protects the latch mechanism itself. Used together they give you the best combination of repair and security.

0:00 -hi I'm Jeff from Sussex installations
0:02 -today's video is about you probably
0:05 -guess it it's a hole in the van hole
0:07 -through the side lad door of a Ford
0:09 -Transit Connect van this is a Ford
0:12 -Transit Connect van it's a short
0:14 -wheelbase Ford Transit Connect van short
0:16 -wheel Bas and long wheel Bas are have a
0:19 -different size door and they need a
0:20 -different shield this is the short
0:23 -wheelbase one and it's an absolute
0:25 -nightmare we've got people Tradesmen all
0:28 -over the country that keep getting in
0:29 -touch with us have you got a shield for
0:31 -uh to repair the damage in my door my
0:33 -full connect and the answer up until now
0:37 -has always been no and the reason for
0:38 -that is the body shape of this is a
0:41 -nightmare look we've got the Contours of
0:43 -the van the suage lines here which is
0:45 -normal enough but then just below that
0:47 -we've got this wheel Arch and where the
0:49 -latch sits inside the door it's near the
0:52 -wheel Arch and that seems to be where
0:53 -the fees were attacking so if the fees
0:55 -were just sticking to attacking up high
0:57 -near that Sage line and we could just
0:59 -make a shield and finish
1:00 -like here on this flat Edge that would
1:02 -be fine with all the Contours of the van
1:04 -here and then with these curved Contours
1:06 -of the van here it's an absolute
1:08 -nightmare what I've done is been
1:10 -wrecking my head trying to come up with
1:11 -a solution for this like I spent weeks
1:13 -on this I dreamt about it I felt about
1:16 -it throughout the day and I've tried
1:17 -many many things but here's the good
1:19 -news Well fingers crossed as long as we
1:21 -get through this today there will be a
1:27 -solution behold we have the B Shield I
1:30 -present to you I do
1:33 -a
1:35 -Batman would that be copyright violation
1:38 -but it's I'm not sure if we can get away
1:40 -with the bat Shield but internally I'm
1:43 -referring it to it as the bat Shield
1:46 -it's bat Shield developed by someone who
1:49 -might be
1:51 -bat crazy at times to come up with such
1:54 -a crazy idea and to still be trying
1:57 -after all them different versions one 2
1:59 -2 3 4 38 whatever we got to but guys we
2:03 -have a solution for you um it's
2:06 -difficult to get here ideally we just do
2:08 -like we do with normal we just go with a
2:10 -body workor with a nice flat Shield that
2:12 -just matches all the Contours perfectly
2:14 -but in this case it's just not possible
2:16 -so rather than you guys having to have a
2:18 -whole new door on your van there is a
2:20 -solution at least so short wheelbase the
2:23 -back shield from Sussex installations
2:25 -available on our website or on our
2:27 -Amazon shop or eBay shop I'm sure also
2:30 -so go online or get in touch with us via
2:33 -the website is
2:34 -www.Sussex install. co.uk thanks for
2:37 -watching this video also check out our
2:40 -internal shield for this van I put a
2:42 -heck of a lot of effort into that one
2:43 -too so maybe check the video out on that
2:45 -one on our YouTube channel the internal
2:47 -Shield very very useful from a security
2:49 -point of view the external Shield really
2:52 -good to repair and cover up the whole in
2:54 -your door the external Shield can also
2:56 -give an additional bit of additional um
2:58 -security too and if particularly if used
3:01 -in combination with the internal Shield
3:02 -so thanks for watching the video we do
3:04 -have a solution for you don't forget to
3:06 -um give us a like on the video be much
3:08 -appreciated and please do subscribe to
3:10 -our YouTube channel so we can keep you
3:11 -up to date with the latest inan security
3:14 -as things do change look if you're um
3:17 -thinking about buying one of these
3:18 -shields and thinking about fitting it
3:19 -yourself carry on watching I'm just
3:21 -going to give you a little bit of an
3:22 -idea we're going to fit one start to
3:23 -finish and you get a bit of an idea of
3:25 -what's involved in fitting it if you're
3:27 -going to fit it yourself if you feel
3:28 -like it's a bit too much F to fit then
3:30 -either get us to fit it or your local
3:32 -van security specialist to fit it for
3:34 -you but we do provide really detailed
3:36 -instructions so it's it's actually not
3:38 -that difficult in most cases you know if
3:39 -you're competent with a drill and all
3:41 -that kind of stuff so again thanks for
3:42 -watching stay tuned if you want to check
3:44 -out a little bit of the installation
3:46 -from start to
3:51 -[Music]
3:58 -finish
4:10 -[Music]
4:16 -[Music]
4:28 -[Music]
4:34 -[Music]
4:43 -[Music]
4:56 -okay so we just did the installation of
4:58 -it start the Finish finish give you a
5:00 -bit of an idea of what it's like to fit
5:01 -it yourself this is a solution for you
5:03 -van if you want to sort of stay tuned
5:05 -and check out how I come to the
5:06 -development of this bat Shield this kind
5:08 -of crazy idea with a solution for this
5:11 -really really difficult problem then
5:13 -stay tuned and I'll give you a bit of an
5:15 -in-depth FL from the development bit of
5:17 -behind the scenes stuff going on stay
5:19 -tuned if you're interested check it out
5:20 -it was an absolute nightmare getting
5:22 -this done but we did get it done check
5:24 -it out I do have a prototype here which
5:26 -I've spent like forever making and we
5:28 -are just about to test it on this van
5:30 -we're just fine tuneing a few little
5:32 -details while this tradesman's here
5:34 -wandering the streets of uh eastor we're
5:36 -fine tuning the details and we're going
5:38 -to get ahead nail the final design on
5:40 -this sign it off fit it to this van
5:42 -build all the jigs so we can attach the
5:44 -studs to it short wheel base and long
5:46 -wheel base I'm going to show you some of
5:47 -the differences if you got short wheel
5:49 -base like this door
5:51 -here small Gap there you've got a short
5:54 -wheel base if you've got a long Gap
5:58 -there
6:00 -you've got the long wheel base for
6:01 -connect the long wheel base we've got a
6:03 -solution for that which is here and
6:05 -we've had that available on our website
6:07 -for quite some time we sold lots of
6:09 -these so that's there as a great um
6:11 -repair Shield if you've got a long wheel
6:12 -B connect that's got a hole in it but
6:14 -this short wheel base this is what we're
6:16 -now talking about how do we solve this
6:20 -problem so this is my trail of
6:23 -development in a lap not normally you
6:25 -refer to development in terms of laps as
6:27 -more of a racing thing but let's take a
6:29 -lap of this van because that's what the
6:31 -development spans we started
6:33 -here trying out many different concepts
6:36 -different shapes what can we do what can
6:38 -we make of it just kept going and going
6:41 -kept going and going and going and going
6:43 -and eventually we are at this point
6:46 -here it's a very unique design I mean in
6:52 -life I've been going around for many
6:53 -years I got my 50/50 projects you know
6:55 -where something's like so out there so
6:57 -crazy because it's a difficult um
6:59 -problem like and it's difficult to make
7:00 -a solution for it that it could be
7:02 -absolutely amazing or it could be an
7:04 -epic fail and there's really no way of
7:06 -telling until you actually just go ahead
7:08 -and do it so I've had lots of those in
7:09 -life where I just go ahead do it so
7:11 -Charlotte from my office a couple of
7:13 -years ago she upgraded my 50/50 project
7:15 -she says well Jeff they normally work
7:16 -out so we settled with 75 25 projects so
7:20 -let's see this is definitely one of
7:21 -those projects let's see can we get this
7:24 -working can we get this van repaired
7:26 -looking nice can we get this out the
7:28 -door today with this shield on our
7:30 -development door and it was basically
7:33 -basically there I got a good fit on the
7:34 -door I've actually got a solution so
7:36 -could save you guys a heck of a lot of
7:38 -money and a lot of hassle trying to find
7:39 -new doors for your Ford connect short
7:41 -wheel bases with this little invention
7:44 -behold it is the bat
7:46 -Shield I played Batman but then I won't
7:49 -be able to put this music I wouldn't be
7:50 -able to put this YouTube video up
7:51 -because the copyright of the music no
7:53 -doubt um so here we are with it and I
7:56 -got to the point where basically it
7:57 -fitted the door but we actually needed a
7:58 -van we needed a van so we could check
8:01 -that it's going to clear the body work
8:02 -as the as the lip that I've got on here
8:06 -as the lip of it that I've got on here I
8:07 -need to check that we clear the body
8:09 -work of the van and that's what we got
8:10 -here we got a van customer's been broken
8:12 -into um yesterday he's come down from
8:15 -London today we're very busy here but
8:17 -I'm just going to slip this in and try
8:19 -try and get this nailed because it's
8:21 -been such an effort that's gone into
8:24 -this Shield the external shield for this
8:26 -van for the short wheeel base we did the
8:28 -external Shield for the long wheel base
8:30 -and we also gone to a lot of effort for
8:32 -a standalone internal Shield that's
8:34 -compatible with both the short wheel
8:36 -base and the long wheel base whether
8:38 -they got the external Shield fitted or
8:40 -or our internal Shield fitted so a good
8:42 -product range for the side load doors
8:43 -for these connects whether they're short
8:45 -wheel base or long wheel base stay tuned
8:48 -let's
8:56 -go so we're really up against it here
8:58 -we're going from one thing to another
8:59 -we're making the um making the test fit
9:03 -then we're making like the real Shield
9:05 -we're making the Jigs and also at the
9:07 -same time we're trying to take
9:09 -um pictures ready to make the
9:11 -instruction manuals for you guys if
9:12 -you're fitting this this yourself so we
9:14 -got you know we don't miss any steps um
9:17 -we're trying to take the video so we can
9:18 -make the video to put on YouTube which
9:20 -you might be watching right now trying
9:22 -to get the whole job done and yeah it's
9:24 -it's quite a lot of work but it's it's
9:26 -coming together um we have the holes
9:30 -drilled so we're ready to go we just
9:32 -need to wax all this area up we've got
9:34 -the gaskets cut which we cut on our
9:38 -gasket cutting machine or other CNC
9:39 -machine upstairs what I've done with the
9:41 -gasket
9:43 -is I've got it so it's the right shape
9:46 -I've also got it so we're going to put a
9:49 -an extra strip along this Edge just to
9:51 -stop any water running in if any water
9:53 -was to run in down the side of the
9:54 -shield and I'm just looking to have so
9:58 -just in case
9:59 -on the oddd like chance that there is a
10:03 -possibility that any moisture Gets
10:04 -behind the shield between the actual
10:06 -like in this recess area then I want it
10:09 -to come out if there was a chance that
10:11 -somebody fitted one and there was a bit
10:12 -of a gap down the side where they fitted
10:14 -it here and water did somehow manage to
10:15 -get in obviously the vehicle's driving
10:17 -forwards the water's not naturally going
10:19 -to come in from the back but if someone
10:20 -managed to jet wash it or do something
10:22 -of it strange to get water in the shield
10:25 -then I've got this water channel here
10:27 -where it could drip back out in the
10:29 -gasket so trying to put all these steps
10:31 -in trying to finalize this cuz like I
10:32 -said I spent weeks on these already
10:34 -doing those designs for the external and
10:36 -designs for the internals and then
10:38 -putting the timeing today and we got a
10:40 -customer waiting to to get his van and
10:41 -go home so you know it's it's all
10:43 -happening we got Drew here we got Danny
10:45 -on the job we've had to make some
10:48 -realistic calls here haven't we like
10:50 -just to get the stuff done we just got
10:51 -to right okay we just got to get the man
10:53 -at the door get this one um gone and
10:56 -then we can also make a few more little
10:59 -little fine tunes to it back with our
11:01 -development door so I've still got the
11:02 -door here development door but really
11:05 -what I couldn't do what was stopping me
11:07 -from going ahead with this van with this
11:08 -shield and get it developed weeks ago
11:10 -was cuz I had this lip on the edge I
11:12 -needed to make sure that that wasn't
11:14 -going to bump into the Bodywork as the
11:16 -van door closed
11:19 -so I needed an actual van itself to
11:24 -check that out on so that's what we've
11:26 -been doing we just had the masking take
11:27 -there to to protect it where we was
11:29 -testing it and we was been testing with
11:31 -the blue tack but you can't really tell
11:34 -until you actually get one and put a
11:35 -real shield on and be careful with it
11:37 -and test it so we've done what we needed
11:39 -to do with the development of this van
11:41 -we can now just go ahead get the
11:42 -customer get the H customer gone and
11:45 -then we can just finish off those fine
11:46 -little details with our development door
11:48 -and then get this available for you guys
11:50 -so you can fit it on the website if
11:51 -you've got a hole in the van you connect
11:52 -you're going to want one so hopefully
11:54 -it's there available for you right now
11:55 -that you can buy online from us here we
11:58 -go it's it's halfast 5 it's finished
12:00 -going home time isn't it we're after
12:02 -going home time it's been quite a hard
12:04 -day rushing rushing lots of lots of
12:06 -different things going on but we are
12:08 -ready are you
12:10 -ready we have the reveal here it
12:15 -comes put the
12:17 -Batman I would put the Batman music on
12:20 -but I fear that this YouTube be this
12:22 -video be pulled from YouTube for
12:23 -copyright violation here we go look at
12:26 -it go look at it oh
12:32 -nice very
12:34 -[Music]
12:43 -good okay guys so look that's it we've
12:46 -done the um problem we've done the the
12:49 -installation showing you it and I've
12:51 -given you a bit of uh behind the scenes
12:53 -footage of what this development what it
12:55 -took to develop a shield like this which
12:56 -was absolute nightmare um hope you
12:59 -enjoyed the video check out some of our
13:00 -other videos we've got the transit
13:02 -connect the long wheel based version in
13:04 -another video and we've got the internal
13:06 -shield in another video also so please
13:08 -do check it out obviously lots of stuff
13:09 -on the YouTube channel please don't
13:10 -forget to uh give us a like for the
13:12 -video be much appreciated and to uh
13:14 -subscribe to our YouTube channel so we
13:15 -can keep you up to date with the latest
13:17 -inan security thanks for
13:24 -watching
